ELONGATE supported an orphanage located in Kano, Nigeria, operated by the Green Pasture Home Initiative (GPHI), a Non-governmental organization focused on supporting neglected and abandoned children and those affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, disease, injustice, violence, and teenage pregnancy.
Established in March 2001, the organization operates an orphanage that cares for children, infants, and young adults. The poverty rate for children in the region is very high, and support from local organizations like GPHI is crucial to elevating children out of poverty and providing opportunities for them to lead successful lives.
The organization was unable to fund and support renovations to the orphanage. After more than 20 years in operation, the interior was in poor condition. Our team, led by our Continent Manager for Africa and Elongate community volunteers in the region, refurbished the dining room furniture and the closets and bed frames within the boy’s and girl’s bedrooms. They also repaired collapsing ceilings, and the dining room walls and bedroom received a fresh coat of paint. In addition to the renovations, we provided a month’s worth of meals.
